If your vehicle has a roof rack with a cross member then you know it gets noisy one the highway. The outbacks had a rubber pad between the rack and roof that would flap sound like an angry bee hive or whistle. If the surface the wind passes over has a consistent shape the disturbance becomes tonal and at certain frequencies very annoying.
