Step 2 use boiling water.

Sweep the areas of the floor from which you able to remove the loose larger pieces of carpet pad.
Over several years it may have bonded to the polyurethane.
You may want to remove the carpet padding yourself but if you re hiring a professional to work on your wood floor it may be better to have that person remove the padding as well.
